Chiropractic

Chiropractic is an approach to health care that uses spinal manipulation to relieve pain and improve body function. Doctors of chiropractic take a natural approach to promoting health through lifestyle changes, nutrition and exercise.

Chiropractic involves spinal manipulation. Spinal manipulation is a treatment that uses pressure on a joint of the spine. It is also called spinal adjustment. It is used to improve pain and function. Manipulation can be done with the hands or a special device. The careful, controlled force used on the joint can range from gentle to strong and from slow to rapid.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a method of encouraging the body to promote natural healing and improving function. This is done by inserting needles into the body at very precise acupuncture points.

Channels of energy run in regular patterns through our bodies and over its surface. An obstruction in the movement of these energy rivers is like a dam that backs up. This backup affects the internal balance of our body causing symptoms of all kinds.

Acupuncture restores the flow of energy through its channels and returns balance to our body.

Non-Surgical Decompression

Non-surgical spinal decompression is a type of motorized traction that helps relieve neck and lower back pain. Spinal decompression works by gently stretching the spine. This takes pressure off the spinal discs which are the gel-like cushions between the bones of your spine by creating a negative pressure in the disc. As a result, bulging or herniated discs may retract, taking pressure off nerves and other structures in your spine. This, in turn, helps promote movement of water, oxygen and nutrient-rich fluids into the discs so they can heal.

Take the spinal decompression quiz to learn if you are a good candidate for non-surgical spinal decompression.

Radial Shockwave

Radial shockwave therapy used short, intense energy waves travelling faster than the speed of sound to stimulate the breakdown of scar tissue and fibroblasts. This process increases blood circulation and initiates metabolic activity causing an inflammatory response that promotes and stimulates healing. Radial shockwave has been proven to be 91% effective in the treatment of calcific tendonitis, 90% effective in the treatment of plantarfasciitis and 77% effective for tennis elbow.

Iontophoresis

This is a process of transdermal drug delivery by use of a voltage gradient on the skin. It’s like a cortisone injection without the needle and is therefore, non-invasive. It is most commonly used to treat the pain and inflammation related to complaints such as plantarfasciitis and tendonitis.

Commonly asked questions

1What will happen on the first visit?
The first visit is the most important of all the office visits.  The chiropractor will discuss your health history, complete a comprehensive physical examination, complete a baseline study of your nervous using Myo-Vision, a Foot-Levelers foot scan to determine balance and possible order spinal x-rays.  It is so important to establish your diagnosis and the appropriate plan to treat your condition and help you attain the results that you desire.
2Will the chiropractor give me a spinal adjustment on the first visit?
Whether the patient receives an adjustment on the first visit is left to the discretion of the examining chiropractor.  It depends on the examination findings.  Some form of treatment will always be given if you are in severe pain.
3Is chiropractic care covered by OHIP?
Chiropractic services are not covered under OHIP.  However, many extended health care plans do cover a portion of chiropractic services.
4What is the “cracking” noise I hear during an adjustment?
When a chiropractor adjusts or physically moves a bone, a pressure difference is created within the synovial joint.  Gases released cause an audible sound to be heard.  The bones themselves are not breaking or cracking!
5Will I need x-rays?
Not always, but x-rays can help confirm a chiropractor’s diagnosis and can rule out possible fractures.
6Does chiropractic care hurt?
There may be some discomfort because of an injury to the muscle or joint.  Inflamed muscles and joints may feel sore during or after a treatment.  The overall effect though is to help you feel less pain and have more function!
7Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor?
No.
